John Frankenheimer's 1966 movie "Grand Prix" is my pick for the #2 motorsports film of all time.
And as you know, this film is not available on DVD. Nonetheless, it's an incredible film and even in VHS form must be a part of your library.
Paul Zimmerman, enthusiast and owner of http://www.motorsportcollector.com/ has taken on the task of persuading Warner Home Video to release a DVD version.

When it's released, and preferably with remastering, it will hopefully include the Speedvision "Making Of" documentary (with Frankenheimer interview). I've got a copy of this special and it's a must-have for any automotive enthusiast. You'll hear Frankenheimer himself explain how and why he made the film, including how he did shot the final race scene in the film from a helicopter at 180 MPH. And as you see from the image at the left, these were close-ups.
There has never been a film like this, and as Frankenheimer points out, there can never again be a film like this. Technically, legally, financially - it was incredible that it was mad eint he first place.
