The final numbers are in for December, and thus the year. It is not a good story... S2000 sales are down 19.9% from December 2005; and 19.1% from the year of 2005.
I'll remind readers that Motoatsu Shiraishi, Honda’s chairman of research and development, said in October 2005: "The S2000 has not been a success for us... It was offered only with a manual gearbox and this limited its appeal in many markets." Shiraishi hinted that its successor would have to offer paddle-shift gearchanges and other options to broaden their appeal.
Given the poor sales, and the apparent lack of support from Honda R&D, the writing is on the wall for the make-no-compromise approach of the current S2000. We know there wil be a successor, but also that it will lose the sharp edge.
