 MazdaSpeed3 forums - list

There isn't much out there yet for this 5k/year car... but experience is being built up and very slowly parts are arriving. Just released: Brembos.

I can't see tracking this car, except as a substitute for your usual track car on rain weekends, but it would clearly make a great daily driver if you wanted a small car with lots of carrying room. The seats are great, too - it would make a good travelling car.

For lots more MazdaSpeed (3 and 6) information on this site, use the Google seach to the left, or use the Blog explorer tool to look up "Mazda".

 800,000TH MX-5 MIATA

Need a great platform for a race car build-up? The attached press release by Mazda today means there are 800,000 examples to choose from.

The Miata makes for a great autocross or track car. Clean early examples can be found for only a few thousand dollars... later examples with the desirable 1.8 liter engine can be found for just a few thousand more. Parts are inexpensive, race wheels and tires are cheap, and the only limitation is ultimate power. This is the car that demonstrates that handling will always get you more than power on the track.

MAZDA ZOOMS 800,000TH MX-5 MIATA OFF PRODUCTION LINE

-The world’s best-selling, open-top, two-seat sports car sets a new record-

IRVINE, Calif. - Mazda Motor Corporation today announced the production of the 800,000 th MX-5 Miata. Total global production of the MX-5 Miata reached this significant milestone on January 30, 2007 – 17 years and nine months after production commenced in April 1989.

“The original MX-5 Miata reinvented the small, open-top sportscar when it hit the market,” said Jim O’Sullivan, President and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. “The car business is a marathon, not a sprint, and only those vehicles with timeless styling, outstanding value and the very example of ‘fun-to-drive’ become icons. MX-5 is one of those.”

The MX-5 Miata, also known as the Roadster in Japan, was certified as the world’s top-selling lightweight, open-top, two-seat sports car by Guinness World Records when production reached 531,890 units in May 2000. Now that cumulative production has topped 800,000 units, Mazda is reapplying with the Guinness organization to have the record updated.

The current third generation MX-5 was launched in August 2005. As a lightweight, open-top sports car, it features enhanced driving performance through carefully scrutinized savings in body weight, optimal weight distribution and the latest features to meet safety and environmental requirements. In August 2006, Mazda added the Power

Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) model to the MX-5 lineup. The fastest power-operated retractable hard top in the U.S., the MX-5 PRHT features opening and closing cycles that last only 12 seconds and a groundbreaking electric roof system that does not sacrifice trunk space.

To date, the MX-5 has won more than 40 awards, including 2005-2006 Japan Car of The Year, and enjoys worldwide acclaim.

Mazda will continue to evolve the MX-5 and carry forward the “Jinba Ittai” (rider and horse as one) concept of the original, so that even more people will have the chance to experience the fun of a car that responds precisely as the driver intends.

Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

Mazda PR offers list of best places to go topless

Here's an old press release from Mazda suggesting the best spots to go topless. Hmmm... it's their wording. And it's referring to driving roads with the car top down. It's actually be hard to imagine driving a Miata anywhere with the top up.

Note #5, the Texas Hill Country area. They've covered our areas in the most cursory way, there are actually dozens of additional roads that are topless-worthy. See the Events section of our site for numerous examples.

TOP THIS!!! MAZDA ANNOUNCES BEST SPOTS TO GO TOPLESS - AUTOMAKER REVEALS LIST OF DESIRABLE DESTINATIONS FOR CONVERTIBLES -

IRVINE, Calif. July 1, 2003 – As summer kicks into high gear and soaring temperatures cook the asphalt on roads across the country, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), the company responsible for the Mazda Miata, the best-selling convertible sports car of all time, today unveiled its best places to go topless this season.

Mazda’s inaugural “Top-10 Top-Down” list of prime locations throughout the U.S. to take a convertible was announced by MNAO President and CEO Jim O’Sullivan.

“Because of the immense and longstanding popularity of the Miata, Mazda is proud to be linked with all things convertible,” said O’Sullivan. “We know automotive enthusiasts from around the country, especially Miata owners, appreciate the incredible open-air feeling of putting the top down, and we are thrilled to be able to highlight some of the best destinations for a convertible.”

Mazda’s “Top-10 Top-Down” list includes the following locations:

1. Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Albuquerque, N.M. The International Balloon Fiesta has grown to become the largest balloon event in the world. Put the top down for the entire first week of October, when the skies above Albuquerque are transformed from their normal brilliant blue into a kaleidoscope of color. Balloons drift quietly against the backdrop of the Sandia Mountains, while the peaceful sound of a humming engine is muted occasionally by the roar of thousands of people cheering a liftoff.

2. Highway 1. California Coastline. The southern portion of this winding road takes drivers past the old Malibu Pier and glorious Zuma Beach where convertibles easily grab the warm California sunshine. Further north, in Cambria, not far from San Simeon and Hearst Castle, Highway 1 offers vistas of sea lions lazily sunning themselves on the beach below. Drop the top, crank the heater and continue north to majestic Big Sur where the California Redwood trees meet the Pacific Ocean. And further north in Monterey, don’t forget to drop in for a look at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Mazda’s spiritual home.

3. Interstate 84. Portland, Ore. Convertibles were made for the pristine air of the Pacific Northwest, which is best enjoyed along Interstate 84 as it cuts directly through the awesome Columbia River Gorge, with its spectacular waterfalls and rocky crags. Put the top down and enjoy the same crisp gusts that make the Gorge one of the best spots in the country for windsurfing. Also along I-84 from the Dalles west to Portland, relive Lewis and Clark’s approach to the Pacific Ocean after their long journey.

4. Ardy & Ed's Drive-In. Oshkosh, Wis. Enjoy a real blast from the past at this authentic 1950s drive-in restaurant, with food still served the way it was served when it opened in 1948. Car hops roller skate your order to your car, while your favorite 50s and 60s tunes play in the background. Ardy & Ed's serves up big frosty mugs of real draft root beer and other old-fashioned soda fountain favorites. Ardy & Ed's is located across from beautiful Lake Winnebago, a perfect place to park a convertible and star gaze.

5. Texas Hill Country. Central Texas. In the heart of the Lone Star State, Route 16 wanders from San Antonio through cowboy country into the beautifully rugged Texas Hill Country. With Lyle Lovett or Willie Nelson crooning on the stereo, the top must go down along a stretch of Route 470, which winds its way through hills where wildflowers and wildlife abide in harmony. Enjoy 470’s Texas-sized twists and turns as the smell of barbecue floats through the warm, southern air, announcing the arrival of another Texas summer.

6. Daytona Beach, Fla. Drop the top and cruise 16 miles of beautiful hard-packed beachfront on the warm Atlantic Ocean alongside hundreds of other cars, trucks, golf carts and all-terrain vehicles in memory of the original Daytona 500 Speedway. In the early 1900s, just two cars raced across the sand in one of the most spectacular and exciting events in sports: The Daytona 500. Stock car racing on the beach ended in 1953, but the spirit of racing along the ocean is still alive today in Daytona.

7. U.S. 1. Florida Keys. U.S. 1 links a chain of subtropical isles that arc off the tip of Florida. South of the town of Marathon, U.S. 1 crosses the spectacular Seven Mile Bridge, one of the world’s longest bridges. Seemingly made for a convertible, it offers sweeping views of the open Atlantic on the left and the Gulf of Mexico to the right. For its final 30 miles, U.S. 1 crosses one small tropical key after another until it reaches Key West, an eclectic tropical town whose atmosphere is more Caribbean than American.

8. Portland Head Light/Ft. Williams Park. Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Portland Head Light is the oldest of Maine's 66 lighthouses. It was built during Washington’s presidency and is the most photographed lighthouse in America. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote several lines of his poems while sitting at his favorite spot near the base of this tower. "Sit in reverie and watch the changing color of the waves that break upon the idle seashore of the mind," Wadsworth advised. Convertible owners can park, put down the top and watch from there.

9. Blue Ridge Parkway. North Carolina to Virginia. There are certain roads that scream for a convertible, and nowhere is a case better made for just that than the Blue Ridge Parkway. This 469-mile road that connects Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks offers both beauty and adventure at every turn. Go topless and inhale the stunning scenery and close-up views of the ancient hills and smoky hollows that make up the Blue Ridge Mountains.

10. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Monterey, Calif. Nestled in the hills overlooking the picturesque Monterey Peninsula lies one of the most historic race tracks in the country. The many winding roads that surround the raceway, which lies sandwiched between the storied towns of Carmel and Salinas, make for exhilarating convertible driving and are bested only by the sinuous two-and-a-quarter-mile racetrack. Spend some time enjoying the racing action, or park under a wise, old cypress tree with a copy of Steinbeck’s Cannery Row.

ABOUT MIATA Since its introduction, the Mazda Miata has been hailed by media and consumers alike. It was named the first ever “Automobile of the Year” by Automobile magazine in 1990. Since then, it has been on Automobile magazine’s “All-Star” list 11 times, and was named the “Best Sports Car under $40,000” in 2002.

Like every Mazda model, the Miata comes with a four-year roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, Miata owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada. For all 2003 Mazda vehicles, the company will provide a free loaner car in the event a warrantable condition requires alternative transportation.

The 2003 Mazda Miata is covered by a comprehensive four-year/50,000-mile warranty that covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. In addition, the Miata is covered by a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.

Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships nationwide.

F20C swaps into 318i: the ultimate 4 for the ultimate driving machine

In the past week, we've learned about swapping a Supra 2JZ into an S2000.

But what do you do with the F20C engine from the S2000? It's the ultimate 4-cyl engine, so you put it into an old 3-series you have lying around. This video from Best Motoring shows us the results.

And now what do you do with the old 318i 1.8 liter engine? Well, that becomes a boat anchor... since it was never worthy of anything anyway - much less "the ultimate driving machine".
