S2000 - JDM Type S versus American CR

It was initially thought that the Japanese Type S - the analogy to the American CR - was identical to the CR. But, look closely, it has a power convertible top.

Apparently the wings, suspension, and interior are identical. The Japanese have not yet fully announced the Type S, so it's not yet known if the aero faring/top delete is an option. The removable hardtop has always been an option since day 1 eight years ago.

JDM Honda S2000 site - Japanese translation

Here's a new way to explore the Honda of Japan S2000 site - the new Microsoft Live Translator tool.  You'll see some issues with SSL pages, and Flash pages, but by and large it works. Translations end up in pigeon English of course, but the meaning and intent is clear.

Also clear is the fact that Honda sells and markets this car very differently in Japan... to true driving enthusiasts. Look at the forums, the track days, the driving instruction, owner's talk, Q&A. Compare that to the US site, which doesn't offer anything of the spirit of the car the designers intended.

This is one reason why the S2000 is in decline in the North American market... Honda is not helping potential buyers understand the original purpose of the car. Some of the American car magazines get it, and it remains a perennial favorite, but given the terrible sales decline it's clear that the original spirit which is alive and well in Japan is dying over here. The CR is the last gasp and I believe that most dealers won't understand what's it for or how to sell it (and whom not to sell it to).

Your homework assignment: sign up for the email newsletter for the Type S (their CR model).

Continue at link. Note - you must right-click and open the translation site in it's own window or tab. If you don't pick up the URL to translate it's http://www.honda.co.jp/S2000/SP/

 Classic Commercial: Honda Impossible Dream

From Honda of UK.

Not an old commercial, but retro themes from the history of Honda. Note the old S500 as well as the new S2000. Stars British actor Simon Day driving and riding a number of classic and modern Honda products. Hist first vehicle is the classic Honda "monkey bike", which was a plan to build a small bike that could fit into both a car and a boat.
