It’s no secret that we are big fans of the Toyota 86/Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. Sized right, with the main focus on crisp handling dynamics, and given an energetic engine delivering 100HP/liter – what could be better?
Subaru recently released a two-part video discussing the development of the BRZ. This is the insider view of the engineering of the new car, including footage of the two original development and test mules and a discussion of the suspension and testing. There are lots of interesting details, including engine placement, the location of the starter, details of the electric power steering system, and much more.
The video also includes a section showing the shortened 4-door Imprezza and 2-door “mules” that were engineering development platforms. The mules were used to develop the BRZ suspension underneath a hacked-together hodgepodge of mismatched body parts. The 4-door revealed the track of the new platform and the 2-door revealed the width and length. Readers will remember these from spy pictures over the past few years.
The videos are in Japanese with English subtitles.
