Overdue: 2019 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

2018-01-15

Caught in spy photos for years, a turbulent development (first turbocharged, then switched to supercharged), fake news and rumors all around — and now it’s finally been previewed. No detailed press release, no photos, just a few short lines and a video. And it won’t be available until “2019” (not specified as “summer 2018” as in the case of the 2019 Mustang Bullitt, but specifically the “calendar year 2019”).

Even worse, it has been saddled with the stigma of drag racing. What is clearly a car designed for road racing has – at the last moment – had the tag of drag racing added to it. No doubt some Ford executive worried about competing with the (absurdly heavy) Challenger “Demon”, a purely straight line car with 805 factory HP (stock, 840 once you update the computer and find 100 octane gas). Or perhaps it was the Ford dealers who wanted this as an excuse to mark up the car even more than it would be already (and in the 6 hours since the announcement no doubt already has been). In any case, it may be the 2019 NAIAS show before we see the GT500 fully revealed and spec’d out.

Nor is the HP announced, but this is normal this far ahead of production. Declared as “700+”, it will undoubtedly be closer to 750 by the time it reaches production in a year. 755 would put it on par with the 2019 ZL1 Corvette.
