Audi commercials make a fun night

Filling on an opinion survey tonight about Audi commercials… don’t know why it came to us but we had fun watching them and then answering the questions.

Here’s two for you to sample. Go full screen, turn up your volume!

The first we had never seen before. We thought it was creative, represented the essence of the brand well, and was humorous. It’s titled “Ahab”.

And the next one had us laughing and clapping for the kid. It’s titled “Big Game”, and that is exactly what he is hunting at his prom:

The final question in the opinion survey was if this was a company we want to do be associated with. The answer is an unqualified “Yes!”.

Audi Press Release follows:

The Countdown Begins:  Starting at Midnight Tonight, Vote for How Audi’s Super Bowl Spot Will End

• Audi to let audiences choose the ending of its Super Bowl XLVII spot on YouTube • Voting to take place for 24 hours beginning at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thurs., Jan. 24 and closing at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Fri., Jan. 25. • Final spot to be revealed online on Saturday, Jan. 26 and will also air during the big game on Super Bowl Sunday

For the first time in its Super Bowl history, Audi will let audiences select the spot they want to see run during the big game.  Audi will post three versions of its Super Bowl spot, each with a different ending, to its YouTube page and allow viewers to choose how they want the spot to end.  The final spot will debut on YouTube in advance of the game and on CBS during Super Bowl XLVII in the first break after kickoff.  Voting on YouTube will be open for 24 hours, beginning at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, January 24 and closing at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, January 25.
In the spot, viewers will follow a nervous teenage boy as he embarks on one of the most pivotal moments of American adolescence: prom night.  With no date and no confidence, the teen is discouraged until his father tosses him the keys to an all-new 2013 Audi S6. With the power of the Audi S6 at his fingertips, the teen is suddenly determined, inspired.  When he enters the gymnasium, he heads directly towards the prom queen and kisses her.  What happens next is up to the viewer to decide.
“Audi has a long history of experimentation with social media, especially during Super Bowl season,” said Loren Angelo, General Manager of Brand Marketing, Audi of America.  “This year, Audi – which is Latin for listen – is listening to our fans, allowing them to take part in the creative process and have a voice in how our spot should end.”
Audi’s Super Bowl spot was created by San Francisco-based Venables Bell & Partners.
Every year, Audi challenges the status quo with a Super Bowl spot that celebrates emotion and individuality.  This year, Audi’s ad salutes the unconventional bravery that propels people to take risks and pave their own paths. The spot will feature the 2013 Audi S6 performance sedan – a vehicle that stands for power, confidence and pushing limits.
Proven on the track, Audi’s award-winning and progressive technologies such as TFSI engines and quattro® all-wheel drive inspire the new S6 and provide a driving experience that is engineered for the driver.  The S6 is fitted with the 4.0T twin-turbo V8 – delivering 420 horsepower – and is fitted with a seven-speed double clutch S tronic® transmission and cylinder on demand technology. The S6 offers incredible interior design and craftsmanship such as Atlas carbon fiber inlays, diamond-stitched sport seats and the highest levels of technology through the Audi MMI Navigation plus system with Audi connect™.
Last year, Audi’s entertaining spot “Vampire Party” showcased the power of progressive engineering with the brand’s signature LED headlight technology.  In 2011, Audi’s “Release the Hounds,” featuring the Audi A8 and a cameo by Kenny G, redefined luxury and became the first Super Bowl spot in history to use a Twitter hashtag. In 2010, Audi’s Super Bowl ad showcased a soundtrack created by rock legends Cheap Trick and featured the A3 TDI “Green Car of the Year” showing how easy being green can be. The brand’s 2009 spot featured actor Jason Statham in a series of high-speed chase scenes involving luxury competitors, sending the message that luxury is evolving. In 2008, the brand’s first Super Bowl spot delivered a parody of the movie “The Godfather,” signaling that Audi was ready to take on the perceived luxury leaders.
ABOUT AUDI Audi of America, Inc. and its U.S. dealers offer a full line of German-engineered luxury vehicles. AUDI AG is among the most successful luxury automotive brands globally. Audi was a top-performing luxury brand in Europe during 2011, and broke all-time company sales records in the U.S. Through 2016, AUDI AG will invest about $17 billion on new products and technologies.

Subaru video series “Launch Control”: Part 1 Episode 2

Subaru-Logo1Subaru teased us with the introduction to a new series featuring rally cars in North America. And now we have episode 1.

Rallying is the most original form of motorsports. It takes us back to the days when there were no paved roads in the country – but with modern cars and engines. The object is simply to get the fastest time on a closed off section of back-country road, called a “stage”, and there are several of them over the course of a day or two.

No restrictions, no excuses. And thankfully, no Olympian egos, no Danica Patrick love life, no redneck fist fights, or any other drama. Safety? No whining about how many guardrails a track should have – there isn’t a track and there are no guardrails. Just driving in its purest form.

One of the highlights of our own motorsport hobby has been attending professional rallies in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Washington. We were never able to attend the Sno*Drift rally, unfortunately, but hope to do so one day. As the name says, it’s in the dead of winter, and the conditions are the worst possible. And that’s exactly what ralliests do.

Go full screen, turn up your volume, and enjoy!

Subaru premiers new video series “Launch Control”

With sales booming and the economy picking up, Subaru is in a financial position to increase their focus on rally events even further. But with the current WRX and WRX STI fairly dated and a much-needed replacement just over the horizon (recently seen testing at the Nurburgring), it’s more important than ever to keep momentum going to support sales. Hence, a new series of videos highlighting factory rally teams competing in Rally and RallyCross.

Kudos to Subaru for keeping support of the hobby going thru the economic downturn! And for creating the following *terrific* video. Learn more at Subaru’s dedicated site: http://subaru.com/rally.

Subaru Releases “Launch Control”

• Action packed new web-series with an all-access pass behind the scenes of the Subaru Factory Rally and RallyCross Teams

Cherry Hill, N.J., – Subaru of America Inc. has released the first episode of “Launch Control”, a bi-weekly web video series that chronicles Subaru Rally Team USA and the Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team as they prepare for and compete in a fast-paced 2013 race season spanning the globe. With a mix of in-car video, car prep and driver interviews, “Launch Control” is the story of two teams, everything it takes to win and everything that gets in the way.

In the debut episode of “Launch Control,” Subaru Rally Team USA driver and defending Rally America Champion David Higgins is training for the upcoming season at his home in Wales, UK, while the crew at Vermont Sports Car, the Subaru technical partner managing both teams, is hard at work in the shop preparing the 2013 Subaru WRX STI team cars for a the season ahead.

If there is a team that knows what goes into winning a championship, SRT USA would be it. Subaru’s 2012 Rally America championship victory marked their second in a row and their sixth in seven years.

RallyCross, on the other hand, is relatively new for the team. Competing in the emerging Global RallyCross Championship the team must tackle new venues, new race formats, new rules and new cars. Challenging the established RallyCross teams from Europe, the learning curve for team drivers Bucky Lasek, Dave Mirra and team leader and three-time European RallyCross Champion Sverre Isachsen, has been steep.

“Launch Control” will follow the trials and triumphs of these two teams throughout their 2013 seasons and give viewers a behind the scenes look at the efforts of the drivers, engineers and mechanics as they fight for victories.

Subaru WRX concept: Subaru shows it still has it

thumb_2013-subaru-wrx-conceptAt the New York International Auto Show this week, Subaru presented its concept of  the next WRX. We love it!

The current WRX and STI are built off of the previous Impreza chassis… the current Impreza having moved up in the world (and improved considerably) over a year ago. The concept is build on top of the new Impreza chassis, so there aren’t any surprises there. Then there is the styling of the concept… which is of course not the production car (like most concepts, the over-sized wheels and tires wouldn’t provide enough suspension travel to service in the real world). And the question of the roof profile and height – which are not production and again subject to major change (you’ll note the rear windows are likely unable to roll down). Same for the concept flares, the brakes, and the 20″ wheels (although at 245, the width is likely to remain).

Subaru didn’t say anything about the engine, but it’s likely to be the same variation on the BRZ motor that has already been introduced into other lines with turbocharging and direct injection (by Subaru, not the Toyota system) and a bit more power.

THE ALL-NEW SUBARU WRX CONCEPT DEBUTS AT THE 2013 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

  • SUBARU WRX CONCEPT hints at next generation WRX design language
  • Focus is on sharp handling, AWD grip and turbo power
New York -  Subaru of America, Inc. today unveiled the SUBARU WRX CONCEPT at the 2013 New York International Auto Show at the Jacob K. Javits Center. The design concept hints at the design language of the next generation WRX.
The bold and muscular design emphasizes turbocharged power and AWD grip in a more agile and athletic form.  The SUBARU WRX CONCEPT blends the WRX’s famous power and road-holding prowess with an even greater focus on sharp handling, steering and communicative chassis.  To further improve handling dynamics, the SUBARU WRX CONCEPT features a carbon-fiber roof to enhance the already low center of gravity and reduce weight.
Considerably lower, sleeker and wider, the SUBARU WRX CONCEPT delivers even more street presence than previous generations of WRX. The new grille design is larger and bolder and sets off the classic WRX hood scoop. A pronounced powerbulge provides clearance for the new turbocharged engine and intercooler. A prominent hexagonal grille form and deep lower valences with air intakes are designed to enhance aerodynamics, add downforce and aid engine cooling.
The three dimensional mesh pattern of the grille denotes the sporting nature of the SUBARU WRX CONCEPT and sets the Subaru star cluster apart, while the new hawk-eye headlights integrate the Subaru family design heritage.
A sharp character line runs from the front corner through to the taillights, intersected by the boldly flared wheel arches emphasizing the Subaru’s AWD system. The compact cabin greenhouse draws attention to the power and solidity of the body and focuses attention to wide stance that provides a visual link between body and chassis.
The rear design echoes the hexagonal design motif from the front grille and features a dramatically curved trunk lid that also acts as a rear spoiler. The distinctive wide rear bumper of the SUBARU WRX CONCEPT adds to the powerful street presence of the car and is off-set by large quad tailpipes denoting the powerful turbocharged engine. The aggressive rear diffuser improves vehicles aerodynamics.
The all-new SUBARU WRX CONCEPT features a new paint color, “WR Blue Pearl III”, which modernizes the iconic WRX look. Fluorescent Yellow is used as an accent on the WRX badge on the front grille, the brake calipers and the exhaust tip finishers, adding character notes to the design.
Filling out the broad fenders are BBS “RI-D” One Piece Forged Duralumin wheels and featuring 245/40ZR20 Dunlop tires with an exclusive tread pattern.
Key Dimensions (Overall Length x Width x Height): (178.0in x 74.4in x 54.7in ), Wheelbase: (108.7 in.)

Subaru to introduce performance concept car at 2013 New York International Auto Show. STI???

With a new Impreza already a year old, and the old STI still produced on the old Impreza platform, a new STI is well overdue.

The new Impreza is handsome, and is a considerable step up in interior design over the current car. Of course, WRX and STI owners don’t exactly care about that… the bigger question is the specifications of both future models. Or even IF the concept to be introduced in New York is an Impreza-based one at all. It could be a BRZ-based concept (after all, just what are those winged and big-brake BRZs driving around the Nurburgring?). We’ll know soon!

The following (silent) press video shows the 148 HP 2013 Impreza in action… add another 150+ HP and you have the heart and soul of the new STI.

1958 BMW Isetta 300 at Austin Cars and Coffee

logo_bmw-isetta-300BMW was not always the ultra-successful enthusiast-oriented company that we know today, but instead had a far more humble beginning that most BMW owners are totally unaware of.

In the early 1950s, BMW was in serious financial difficulty and had to make a strategic move forward to save the company, which as an armament maker in World War II had been literally wiped out. Messerschmitt and Heinkel, former aircraft manufacturers, had also been all but destroyed in the war and were having a moderate success building ultra-small economy cars. To get the company on an even footing, BMW decided to go into the micro-car business by licensing the Iso Isetta Italy.

The Isetta was designed in Italy by Iso spA and was built across Western Europe starting in 1952. Europe was recovering from the ravages of World War II, and what was needed most as the separate economies struggled was a small and economical car. Emphasis on small and economical: the rear engine/rear-wheel drive 1 cylinder 1-stroke gasoline Isetta was only 90 inches long.

The Isetta was affectionately known as the “bubble car” because of its shape. BMW licensed the Isetta design, reworked it very slightly from the original for 1955, and changed the engine to a 4-stroke 250cc motorcycle engine. The basic car would stay in production thru 1962. 161,360 BMW Isettas were produced from 1955 thru 1962, in three models: 200, 300, and 600 (4-door, 4 seats, and the introduction of the BMW semi-trailing arm independent suspension that we still know today). The original 250cc models could be operated with only a motorcycle license until 1956, when the West German Federal government changed the laws.

Today’s example is a 1958 model, a second-generation car that saw the side windows redesigned and a slightly larger 300cc engine used. With a 7:1 compression ration, the engine now produced 13 HP with a matching 13 ft-lb of torque. The top end was only 53 MPH.

We were very pleasantly surprised to find this Isetta at the Austin Cars and Coffee event in February 2012. We’d seen two Isettas outside of Austin before, and immediately recognized the egg-shaped car. This is truly a fascinating car, with all sorts of intelligent and clever features to examine in detail.

The most obvious feature of the Isetta line is the single front-opening door. Note the hinged steering column, which swings to the side with the door (you didn’t think that Ford invented the swing-away steering column, did you?). The seatbelts in this example were added by the owners, who in the spirit of Cars and Coffee were gracious enough to show us around their car.

Yes, that is the familiar BMW roundel.  The roundel evolved form the original Rapp Motorenwerke logo, and the blue and white colors reflect the flag of Bavaria. Most BMW enthusiasts will claim that the blue and white center reflects a spinning aircraft propeller, but that was not the design and was only the suggested by a late-50s advertising campaign.

The door hinges and the controls are on the left, and the weight of the driver balances the rear engine mounted on the right. A version built for Britain flips the hinges and controls over to the right side, but of course the engine remained in the right side as well and required a balancing weight to be added on the left. The chrome bumpers, the tubes and the bar on the door, were an option.

Detail of the steering column. Note the pivot point, which allows the column to move with the door. Note the shifter in the gray boot, on the side of the car, for the 4-speed transmission. 4-speeds were unusual then, but this allowed the diminutive engine to have some greater flexibility.

The vertical silver bar adjusts the heater, which is located under the seat. Note the decal on the front inner fender. Just above that is the choke.

The Isetta is a 4-wheel car (3-wheel cars produced in Britain starting in the fifties were an attempt to circumvent taxes). In the back we find the gas filler and the optional luggage rack. Note the opening on the right for the engine.

The left side is smooth.

Moving around to the front again, we see a grill on the front door. This was an option, with a moving vent behind it, to provide fresh air flow to the driver and passenger.

Steering wheel and 60-MPH speedometer.

Sun visors, made from cardboard. Note the roundel shape pressed into the corner.

The Isetta was a wide car, 54″, designed for two and undoubtedly often holding two adults and a child.

Door closed. Note the door handle on the left side. Also note the high-mounted headlamps, undoubtedly providing excellent illumination.

Door closed, view thru the right side sliding window.

Door closed, view thru the optional sliding cloth sunroof.

298cc engine, air-cooled, 13 HP. A cover is normally provided here, but wasn’t present today.

We would like to see this car on a lift in order to examine the drivetrain.

A chassis diagram detailed the underside can be seen here.

New BMW M Performance Parts for the new BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedans

With the price of a new M5 sedan starting at $89,000 USD, and the price of the upcoming M3 twin-turbo likely starting at 80k or higher, BMW has left a large number of buyers behind. Hence the new line of BMW M Performance parts – an attempt to split the wide gap and allow enthusiasts to build a car a piece at a time.

BMW Press Release follows:

New BMW M Performance Parts for the new BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedans.

Aero, Interior, and Chassis items added to lineup

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – December 14, 2012…  BMW today announced the release of a second major wave of BMW M Performance Parts designed and tested for the new BWW 3 Series and current 5 Series Sedan models. On sale now through all Authorized BMW Centers, BMW M Performance Parts are accessories which have been carefully developed in collaboration with BMW M GmbH to ensure an authentic transfer of racing-derived M technology into everyday driving. In addition to the first wave of new 3 Series and 5 Series M Performance Parts which became available in Spring 2012, the latest offering includes exclusive chassis, aerodynamic, and cockpit components to further intensify The Ultimate Driving Machine®.

Aero: Form follows function.

The BMW 3 Series and 5 Series Sedans both benefit from this release of parts with new Aerodynamic and Exterior component choices. For the 3 Series, the BMW M Performance Front Splitter, Rocker Panel Blades, Rear Spoiler (in choice of black or carbon fiber finish), Rear Diffuser, Side Stripes, and Rocker Panel Decals become available. Additionally, an M Sport Line Retrofit kit is now available for vehicles not originally equipped with M Sport Line.

For the 5 Series Sedan, a new BMW M Performance Rear Diffuser is offered for 528i, 535i, and 550i models, and will be joined by a new Carbon Fiber Front Splitter which becomes available early in 2013. An M Sport Package Retrofit kit will also become available for 5 Series Sedan models in 2013.

Interior: Show that matches your Go.

For the BMW 3 Series, BMW M Performance now offers a Stainless Steel Driver’s Footrest and a set of Stainless Steel Pedal Covers for manual and automatic transmission cars. Additionally, a set of BMW M Performance Floor Mats is now available, as are the BMW M Performance Carbon Fiber Parking Brake Handle with Alcantara boot.

The crowning touch, certainly, for the 3 Series interior is to install the BMW M Performance Electronic Steering Wheel which is now available for cars equipped with the Automatic, Sport Automatic, or 6-speed manual transmission. The latest-generation Electronic Steering Wheel, featuring a flat-bottom rim and covered in Alcantara, is a unique offering in the industry and allows drivers to take advantage of three separate information modes:

  • EfficientDynamics Mode shows the driver real-time fuel efficiency data, average speed and efficiency data, water and oil temperatures, recommended shift points, and an EfficientDynamics Index (“EDI”) calculation.
  • Sport Mode features a built-in stopwatch function, G-force meter for longitudinal and lateral forces, water and oil temperatures, and multicolored LED shift lights.
  • Race Mode features a stopwatch function with storage of values for up to 50 lap times (including lap, max speed, max G-forces), measurement of up to nine sector times within each lap, drag-strip simulator (LED launch countdown, reaction time, 60-foot time, 330-foot time, 1,000-foot time, 1/8th-mile time, ¼-mile time, and trap speeds).

On the 5 Series, the non-electronic M Performance Steering Wheel becomes available, featuring a flat-bottom rim and covered in Alcantara. A red quick-index stripe is located at the 12 O’clock location, and the wheel is finished with a carbon fiber insert with chrome BMW M Performance inlay.

Additionally for the 5 Series, a BMW M Performance Carbon Fiber Interior Trim system is now available for models with both Automatic (nine pieces) and 6-speed manual (seven pieces) transmissions. It replaces the vehicle’s existing door handle pulls, center console, ashtray lid, cup holder lid, and dashboard insert with beautiful, handcrafted carbon fiber components. Each trim piece is clear-coated and polished to create visual depth and protect against UV rays. Also for the 5 Series, the BMW M Performance Parts Stainless Steel Pedal Covers are now available for vehicles with Automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions.

Chassis and Exhaust: Focused performance for the 3 Series.

A new BMW M Performance Suspension Kit is now available for the new 3 Series Sedan bringing an extra measure of responsiveness and handling to the quintessential sport sedan – a car that has been named to Car and Driver’s “10Best Cars” list for 22 consecutive years. New coil springs, finished in M Performance Red paint lower the ride height by 10mm, compared to the factory M Sport suspension, and by 20mm compared to the standard suspension.

This focused look can be further enhanced with the addition of 20-inch M Performance Double-Spoke wheels. These weight-optimized, forged alloy M wheels feature an exclusive bi-color design sporting a high-gloss turned finish on the face and Orbit Gray paint between the spokes. The wheels come with Pirelli P zero run-flat tires mounted and balanced. The tires are sized 225/35 R20 90Y up front and 255/30 R20 92Y in the rear.

The final dynamic touch is the availability of the M Performance Brake System. The high-performance Brembo system features compound, cross-drilled, dimpled discs mated top 4-piston aluminum calipers up front and 2-piston calipers in the rear. The calipers are available in a choice of M Performance Red, Yellow or Orange finish and sport the M logo. The discs are cross-drilled, grooved and internally vented to optimize thermal resistance and feature aluminum hats to reduce unsprung weight. The front discs measure 370mm x 30mm (14.6 in. x 1.2 in.), the rears 345mm x 24mm (13.6 in. x 0.9 in.).

The available M Performance Exhaust helps both the new 328i and 335i to sound, look and breath better. Developed using state-of-the-art CAD and FEM technology, the stainless steel exhaust improves both the note and the performance. The unique chrome exhaust tips are laser-engraved with the M logo. The system reduces back pressure lends an even sportier tone to either the TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder of the 328i or the TwinPower Turbo Inline-6 in the 335i.

M Performance Wheel and Exhaust upgrades are available for the 5 Series Sedan

The M Performance Exhaust is available for the 535i. Developed using state-of-the-art CAD and FEM technology, the stainless steel exhaust improves both the sound and the performance of the 535i. The unique chrome exhaust tips are laser-engraved with the M logo. The system reduces back pressure and lends an even sportier tone to the TwinPower Turbo Inline-6.

Unique M Performance V-spoke wheels are available for the 5 Series. The exclusive bi-color design features a high-gloss finish on the face and Orbit Gray paint between the spokes. As an option, the wheels can also be finished in Liquid Black paint. They come with Bridgestone Potenza RE050 A run-flat tires mounted and balanced. The performance tires are sized 245/35 R20 95Y up front and 275/30 R 20 in the rear.

Tesla Model S instant torque = instant burnout

Road & Track magazine, usually a paragon of driving maturity, shows some uncharacteristic behavior in this new video. The editors determined how to defeat the traction control system on the Model S, which created the ability to do endless burnouts. Because electric motors create 100% of their available torque at >0 RPM, and produce exceptionally high torque, this type of hoonage is easy.

From the driver’s notes: “Holy hell there’s a lot of torque here. The fuse we pulled disabled ABS, ESP, and traction control (good) and the speedometer and air suspension system (whatever). But it also killed the power steering and vacuum brake assist (yikes). High-speed sideways shots? Uh, no thanks.”

“Through lower-speed corners, the Model S is a drift champ. A quick stab of the accelerator pedal is all you need to break the rear end loose—and then the steering comes alive. Corrections are a breeze; chassis balance and body control are superb. One thing, though: you really, really have to respect that pedal. There’s no rev-limiter to contend with, and no gearing to choose. Mat the pedal, and you’ll be spinning tire up to the car’s 132-mph top speed. That kind of wheelspin (especially at a stop, doing donuts) will blow a tire pretty quick.”

Enjoy! (Don’t repeat this at home)

2014 Jaguar 90-degree 3 liter DOHC supercharged V-6

Jaguar is on a roll: healthy, sales up, and the new F-Type being prepped for delivery in 2013. Add in the XFR-S, and the option of all-wheel drive in the XFR, and Jaguar is primed for further growth.
