As I've done every time for the last ~12 years give or take, I'm participating as an official member of the beta team for the new Office. There are a number of things I want to find out, and a number of issues I want to see addressed. I'm expected to try everything and comment in detail. Therefore, I'll be running it on three systems - a laptop and two towers, one of which is my new Dell XPS400. I just bought this system expressly for testing Windows Vista, so I'll be running office there as well.
I've been running Vista to one extent for another for a year (I've beta tested everything since Windows v2), and the latest CTP is a *very* interesting piece of work that I'm enjoying exploring. I'm looking forward to the November CTP and am hopeful that I can use Beta 2 (or a build no later than in the spring) for my daily-use machine - meaning it has to reach a certain level of stability. The current CTP is not there yet - I'm having issues with driver availability but otherwise it's great. Using it on a daily basis is the only way to drive bug reporting back to Microsoft.
I've also done some experimentation with the latest Visual Studio. Although my developer days are long gone, I can still code C++ and I'm, experimenting with C# (a great language). I've been beta testing the new SQL Server for years, too. I'm unfortunately limited by my ISP's implementation of SQL 2000, otherwise I'd be moving my site over to it and (finally!) implementing the database-driven pages I've been playing with. I may do that yet on the older SQL, but it's a matter of time. I need a couple of days solid to finish coding the pages the way I want them done, and there is no chance of finding that much time in the foreseeable future.
I'm hoping the Office beta is in sufficient form to use as my everyday Office... the way I do my work is really dependent on Office. I've always enjoyed using it - unlike some alternatives out there (especially the rotten Lotus products), using Office has always been a joy, and it's always enabled me to work beter, fatser, and more enjoyably. From my early looks at Office 12, this one will be even more so. It will be an interesting - even intriguing - beta!
