 New MINI commercial!

It's been a while since MINI has given us a new commercial. Here it is now for your enjoyment...

Check past MINI posts to see more commercials and advertising... including the all-time winner - the infamous bondage/Dominatrix advertisement from Canada: http://www.drivingenthusiast.net/sec-blog/categories/miniCooper/2006/12/16.html#a1912

Mini clocked by radar at 2100 MPH

This is an old report from BBC dated April 9, 2004. It's for real... the police admitted their mistake. Now what happens to the rest of us when there is just a small mistake...?

BBC article follows:

Mini
Radar clocks Mini at Mach 3 speed

A Belgian motorist was left stunned after authorities sent him a speeding ticket for travelling in his Mini at three times the speed of sound.

The ticket claimed the man had been caught driving at 3380 kph (2,100 mph) - or Mach 3 speed - in a Brussels suburb, a Belgian newspaper reported.

However, police later admitted that a faulty radar had been responsible for the Mini's incredible feat.

The police have since apologised to the man and promised to fix the radar.

The incident took place in December, but only came to light when Belgian prosecutors were asked to follow up the unpaid fine.

"We called the local police to find out what height the plane caught speeding along the Boulevard Lambermont was flying at," a member of the Brussels public prosecutor's office joked to Belgium's La Derniere Heure newspaper.

Police also said they had made a mistake in still sending out the ticket, given that it was impossible - even for a doughty little Mini - for a car to have travelled so fast.

AutoWeek on the 2007 Mini ... and my comments

AutoWeek also had a few words to say the new Mini this week: http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071126/FREE/311260002/1528/newsletter01

And I of course had my own comments:

The Mini *is* the defacto "2002" of our times.
The BMW 1 series is what the 3-series should have remained: a reasonably sized 4-place family centered around a lithe enthusiasts coupe instead of the bloated heavyweight (although still desirable to a different demographic) it has gradually become (with brakes that fail after only a few fast laps. Ridiculous!).
While I've always liked the Mini a lot (and have driven it at speed around a track), the latest one doesn't work for me. I've seen them, I've driven one, I don't like them anymore.
The last car was cute, with features that were sometimes odd but were always endearing in a British way. The new car just goes too far... the over-exaggeration (particularly the speedometer) is a pantomime of the last car. The poor usability of the dashboard is past the point of quirky-but-acceptable. The radio is absurd.
And I was absolutely aghast at the Works Mini at the LA show last week. The fake hood scoop of the Cooper is bad enough... it is counter to what I thought this car stood for. The wide assortment of additional fake scoops and vents on the Works package ruins it. That was the final straw for me.
While I wouldn't have bought the last car without the Works package... I wouldn't buy this car with or without it.
I'd like to see a total interior redesign. And I'd like Mini to keep in mind that while we appreciate the unique personality of the car, enthusiasts still want function over form.

 MINI Dominates (literally)

MINI of Canada has reworked their earlier Dominatrix ad campaign to bring the same "domination" message to winter driving. The MINI dominates in the hot or cold.

Continue at the link for the site - be sure to note the SAFETY WORD. Click on each snowflake on the car to get the features explained - in double entendre terms...

Apparently the Canadians can get away with a lot more than MINI of USA can. Seriously, MINI has great advertising all over the entire world. It's the type I'd aspire to write if I were in that line of work. Not, of course, that I have the personal experience necessary to write ads for Canada!
